Sana Arif Set for Asian Games Debut with Pakistan

A journey that began with a late introduction to triathlon has now led **Sana Arif to the Asian Games**, where she will don Pakistan’s colours in Japan on 20 September . Currently based in Saudi Arabia , the triathlete is preparing to take on one of the most significant challenges of her sporting career, competing in both the **individual and relay triathlon events**.
Sana’s selection by the **Pakistan Olympic Association** represents a significant achievement for an athlete whose entry into triathlon came only a few years ago. Her progression has taken her from learning the fundamentals of swimming to completing demanding international endurance races.
Born in Kuwait and raised in Lahore, Sana returned to Kuwait in 2007. Her sporting interests eventually led her towards triathlon, and in 2021 she began learning to swim. The transition from beginner to endurance athlete was remarkably swift. Just two years later, she completed an **Ironman 70.3 in Turkey**, an event requiring participants to swim 1.9 kilometres, cycle 90 kilometres and run a further 21.1 kilometres.
The Ironman achievement became an important milestone in her development as a triathlete and was followed by further international experience. Each race added to the experience and endurance required for the next level of competition.
That next level is now the Asian Games.
For Sana, competing in Japan places her on a major continental platform and gives her the opportunity to represent Pakistan in a sport that has not traditionally received the same attention as some of the country’s better-known sporting disciplines.
Triathlon is an exceptionally demanding sport, requiring athletes to combine three different disciplines while maintaining the endurance and mental focus needed to complete them consecutively. International competition also brings considerable demands in terms of preparation, equipment, travel and training.
Sana’s presence at the Asian Games therefore represents more than an individual sporting achievement. It adds to the visibility of Pakistani athletes in endurance sports and highlights the potential for greater participation in triathlon at the international level.
Her story is also a reminder that sporting journeys do not always begin at an early age. Sana entered triathlon later, learned a new discipline and steadily worked her way towards international competition. Her progression has ultimately earned her the opportunity to compete under the Pakistani flag at one of Asia’s major sporting events.
